ANGELES CITY – Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan has vowed to exert his efforts to further develop the tourism industry in Central Luzon, which will put the entire region on the country’s tourism map.
Pamintuan issued the statement during the organizational meeting of the Regional Development Council (RDC) III special committee on tourism at Shanghai Palace Restaurant here on Monday.

Pamintuan, chairman of the RDC-III special committee on tourism, said there is an urgent need to map out a more comprehensive tourism program for the region.
“Angeles City has been a city for so long, and we are far behind in tourism,” said Pamintuan.
The mayor was apparently dismayed after seeing the data presented before him and the convening members by professor Cherry Lyn Rodolfo of the Research, Education and Institutional Development (REID) Foundation.
According to Rodolfo, Central Luzon only gets a five-percent share from total foreign arrivals these past few years.
“This is a decline from the seven percent share the region had in 2006. Region IV has a 19 percent share of the pie, even though it is quite distant from the National Capital region where most tourists arrive,” Rodolfo said.
The council discussed for approval the creation and possible launching of inter-province package tours that will feature hops across the region’s most prominent tourism sites.
This will primarily target foreign tourists who wish to get a view of what the region can readily offer. The project is expected to materialize by August of this year.
“Tourism is the one of the critical panacea for progress. If we boost tourism, we could, in turn, generate employment and open more business for small and medium scale entrepreneurs,” Pamintuan said.
The new Tourism Act of 2009 mandates all primary tourism destinations and services to be accredited with the Department of Tourism. The said establishments like hotels and resorts as well as tour guides, travel agencies and operators must comply with the standards before they will be promoted and endorsed by the government.
“We shall review tourism products in the region and assess their preparedness. We shall guide stakeholders towards accreditation,” the mayor added.
RDC-III on Tourism has members from the provinces of Aurora, Zambales, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan and Tarlac, the Department of Tourism, National Economic and Development Authority, Subic-Clark Alliance Development (SCAD), REID Foundation, Clark Development Corporation (CDC), Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) and representatives from the private sector.
