Palace unfazed by cyber warfare
MALACANANG said Sunday the government has competent IT people who are on hand to protect its websites from cyber attacks.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda made the assurance following report that China is investing in cyber warfare as part of its steady military buildup.
“Our technical people are very competent and we have been coordinating with the DOST (Department of Science and Technology),” Lacierda said.
“As to whether the Chinese are involved or interested in that, we are in no position to comment on that. But suffice it to say that as soon as we receive or we detect from our servers a crime that will point to a denial of service attack, our IT people are on top of it and they are very competent in dealing with it,” he added.
Several government websites such as the Official Gazette (www.gov.ph), the Philippines News Agency, the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office, and the Presidential Museum and Library were recently defaced by alleged Chinese hackers.
The websites of Department of Budget and Management (www.dbm.gov.ph) and the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph) were also became subjects of cyber attacks.
“It has been under several denials of service attacks and so far we have been able to defend our website,” said Lacierda.
The series of websites hacking happened amid a month-long standoff between the Philippines and China over the possession of the Panatag (Scarborough) shoal.
The dispute started last April after the Chinese fishing vessels were spotted poaching marine species in the shoal.
Lacierda, meanwhile, said the Palace has no information on reports that China has sent four naval warships close to Philippines’ territorial waters after the arrival of the US nuclear-powered submarine USS North Carolina.
He said that the Armed Forces still has no information about it either.
Nevertheless, he maintained that the Philippines is pursuing a peaceful resolution on the dispute.
