Palace orders ‘gavel-gavel’ coverage of massacre trial

PRESIDENTIAL Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma has directed the National Broadcasting Network (NBN)-4, the government-owned broadcast network, to undertake a live coverage of the Maguindanao massacre trial.
“In keeping with the President’s longstanding position that the cause of justice and sustained reforms in Armm (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) requires live coverage of the Maguindanao massacre trial, Secretary Herminio Coloma has instructed NBN-4 to undertake a gavel-to-gavel coverage of the trial,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
Last June 14, the Supreme Court (SC) ruled that private and government media could air the full massacre trial.
The SC released several rules for the coverage, which include no selective or partial coverage of the trial, uninterrupted broadcasting of proceedings without commercial break or any gap, and no voice overs and repeat airing of the proceedings.
Breaks are only allowed during recess and closed-door portions of the proceedings.
Only the SC camera will also be allowed inside the courtroom and will only give live feed to media.
Media entities must file a permit to the trial court to air the hearings.
No media entity will be allowed to broadcast the proceedings without an application duly approved by the High Court.
The hearings for the Maguindanao massacre are scheduled every Wednesdays and Thursdays.
President Aquino earlier asked Chief Justice Renato Corona to relax restrictions on the recording and airing of the proceedings.
The President emphasized that co-equal branches of government should ensure that “justice is done” as enshrined in the Constitution.
Aquino noted that live coverage would be advantageous to the families of the victims as they need not to travel to Manila to witness the trial. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
