Palace mum on Duterte’s punching incident

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III has chosen to keep mum about a punching incident that took place between Davao city local officials after one refused the other’s request to delay the demolition of shanties in a village.
The Palace refused to issue a statement regarding the matter to avoid preempting an investigation to be conducted by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte was captured in video punching Regional Trial Court Branch 16 sheriff Abe Andres after the latter rejected the mayor’s plea to wait for two hours before any of the demolition work starts.
In a radio interview Saturday, Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said: “Hindi na rin muna kami magco-comment dahil alam naman natin na nag-initiate ang DILG ng investigation and eventually aakyat yan kay Pangulong Aquino so ayaw muna naming magcomment para wala munang pre-judgment at baka masabi may bias sa investigation (We won’t comment yet because the DILG is doing an investigation that will eventually reach the President. It’s to avoid pre-judgment and for them not to say that there’s bias in the investigation, as well.)”.
DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo have earlier said that a legal team will be sent to Davao City to look into the incident despite the sheriff’s statement that he will not be pursuing any charges against Mayor Duterte.
Duterte may be reprimanded or dismissed from service depending on the results of the DILG probe. The city mayor said she is ready to face the consequences of her actions.
The Palace, meanwhile, assured that actions will be taken against the city mayor, if necessary, despite the President’s political alliance with the Dutertes in Davao City.
The Dutertes, including Sara’s father, Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, supported Aquino in his political bid last May 2010 and is perceived to be allies of the current administration. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
