Palace denies ‘secret meeting’ between Aquino, Ampatuan

MALACANANG on Tuesday denied reports of secret meeting between President Benigno Aquino III and suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) governor Zaldy Ampatuan in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan in Taguig City.
“The President did not meet with Zaldy Ampatuan,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a press briefing in Malacanang.
There is no reason for the President to meet with the Ampatuan scion and the report was just part of the opposition’s way in tainting the administration, he added.
“I think they are trying to stain this administration and to make it appear that we are coddling the Ampatuans. And that is something that we will never do,” the Palace official stressed.
He maintained that the government remains sympathetic to the plight of the families of the victims of the November 2009 Maguindanao massacre where 57 people were killed, including 32 journalists.
Ampatuan earlier said he is willing to testify against his father Andal Ampatuan Sr. and brother Andal Ampatuan Jr. in connection to the grisly massacre.
Zaldy’s attempt to become a state witness has been opposed by several quarters, including the families of the victims and some legal experts.
Malacanang also ruled out the possibility for the Ampatuan scion to turn as state witness.
Zaldy also tagged former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as being the mastermind of the alleged widespread cheating during the 2004 presidential and 2007 senatorial elections.
He said Arroyo ordered to ensure that then senatorial bets Benigno Aquino III, Panfilo Lacson and Alan Peter Cayetano received zero votes in Maguindanao during the 2007 elections.
Meantime, Lacierda said Zaldy could not enter into a plea bargain deal with the government.
“How can you plea bargain when he’s admitting that he has no participation in the crime. When you say plea bargain he is going to admit to the crime. Since he is admitting that he had never participate in the crime how do you expect a plea bargain from that, legally speaking,” the Palace official explained.
In a separate interview, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the panel created by Malacanang is currently assessing the information contained in the draft statement submitted by Zaldy.
“Information and documents such as unsigned affidavits have been furnished us. We are assessing all of these,” said de Lima. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
