Palace confident new envoy to China will pass CA
MALACANANG expressed confidence on Sunday that the newly appointed ambassador to China would not have a hard time passing the Congress’ Commission on Appointments (CA).
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte believed that it would be easier for retired diplomat Sonia Brady to get the nod of the CA, citing the latter’s “extensive” experience in foreign relations.
“Ambassador Brady is a career diplomat. With her extensive experience in foreign affairs and in foreign relations, we are confident that she can ably answer the questions of the members of the Commission on Appointments,” Valte said in her weekly interview over government-run Radyo ng Bayan.
Brady replaced Domingo Lee, who is now a special envoy to China, after the latter withdrew his nomination as ambassador to Beijing as he was bypassed by the CA thrice.
Valte said Brady was chosen by President Benigno Aquino III since she is an “old hand” at foreign affairs.
“The President did say that he wanted someone who could hit the ground running, someone who is already familiar with the culture of the host country, its politics and the ways essentially of the host country,” said Valte.
Brady previously served as ambassador to China during the Arroyo administration from April 2006 to January 2010.
She has concurrent jurisdiction over the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Mongolia.
“She is someone that fulfills the requirements for the post,” Valte stressed, adding Brady’s more than four decades of tenure at the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Senator Sergio Osmena III, who strongly opposed Lee’s appointment for lack of diplomatic experience, said Brady’s confirmation will sail smoothly.
“A cursory read of her career indicates she is well-qualified,” he said in a text message.
Malacañang also believed that Brady would contribute a lot in restoring normalcy in the strained relationship of Philippines and China due to territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea.
“We have a multi-faceted relationship with China that is important for the ambassador to already know the lay of the land,” said Valte.
Brady’s appointment came amid the month-long standoff between the Philippines and China that stemmed from apparent Chinese intrusion in the Philippine territorial waters.
