Palace chides Bishop asking Aquino to quit

MALACANANG refuted the claims of Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos and rebuked him for calling the resignation of President Benigno Aquino III to avoid possible ouster in the long run.
“He (Pueblos) is spewing lies, propaganda, and innuendos — very shocking of a man of the cloth to do so,” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.

The bishop’s assertion was expected since he is a known ally of the Arroyo administration, Lacierda added.
The Palace official said the public continues to trust the President and there is no reason for an uprising.
Pueblos was reported to have urged the President to resign for appointing friends and allies to his administration.
“He is not interested to be President. I can see that. He does not plan, does not study, does not make his own decision, and just lets his friends [make] it. Poor Philippines,” the bishop said adding that he has personal knowledge of some groups that are “working on” to topple the Aquino presidency.
Asked if Malacanang will urge Pueblos to name the groups apparently wanting the ouster of the President, Lacierda said: “I doubt if he will do it. The guy starts from a lie and I doubt if he will speak out the truth. Let him discern the truth if he is man enough to speak out the truth.”
Lacierda belittled the issues the opposition hurled against the Aquino administration saying that none of it could be used as ground to bring down the Aquino administration.
“There’s nothing that they can substantially tie down the President to something which we all should detest and abhor — the issue on graft and corruption. Nobody has said anything. There’s nobody that can claim that the President is dirty. He is not corrupt,” he said.
He also turned the criticisms against the Arroyo administration citing controversies involving the previous administration such as the fertilizer fund scam and the Hello Garci issue.
“You know, everything was silent, we were doing our job, and I guess the opposition has nothing better to do because it is already recess ‘o, teka, mag-ingay muna tayo’. So there are the usual noises, chattering,” he said.
He meanwhile thanked Aquino’s allies in the House for rebutting the accusations of the House opposition bloc against the classmates and close friends of the Chief Executive.
“We elected President Aquino because he was the complete antithesis of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo — that is what we are delivering. We are promising reforms and our promise is to deliver, to reduce poverty, our promise is to curb graft and corruption,” he said.
In the Senate, administration ally Senator Franklin Drilon hit back at Pueblos defending the President.
Drilon said he was “appalled by the gall of Bishop Pueblos to call for the resignation of President Aquino who is only doing his best to institute reforms in government.
“Where was Bishop Pueblos when President Arroyo appointed her manicurist and her gardener to important positions in government?” the senator said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
