PAL warned to stop ‘harassment’ vs protesting ex-worker

A PROGRESSIVE party-list lawmaker has cautioned national carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) against resorting to attacks and harassment as investigation on the ongoing labor dispute continues in Congress.
Expressing his dismay over the recent scuffle involving PAL’s labor union and unidentified men, Bayan Representative Teddy Casiño said the incident will be tackled in the next congressional hearing.
“We are also warning PAL from continuing such attacks and harassments because their patrons are seeing these and would opt to fly other airlines due to their improper way of treating their former employees who are only fighting for their jobs,” Casiño said in a statement.
In response, the airline lashed out at Casiño for blaming the airline management for last week’s confrontation at PAL’s in-flight center in Pasay City, where a bystander was killed due to heart attack, eight people got injured, and three tents were destroyed.
PAL said it was easy for the lawmaker to singularly accuse the management of harassment while turning a blind eye on the misdeeds of protesters led by the PAL Employees Association (Palea).
It also advised those who make “wild and baseless accusations” against the company to “shut up and let the police do the investigative work.”
“Assuming dismissed congressional staff suddenly pickets and block lawmakers and their co-workers from entering the Batasan, they wouldn’t last five minutes and would definitely be dispersed,” PAL said.
Last week’s incident, which allegedly stemmed from the union’s blockade of a catering truck, angered the PAL management, prompting it to prepare libel charges and property right violations against the protesters.
While dismissed workers have a right to seek redress after the implementation of the outsourcing program, PAL maintained that preventing the airline from having free and unhampered use of its own facility is illegal.
The union has been occupying the outside premises of the in-flight center since late September to protest PAL’s outsourcing plan that left 2,300 employees jobless.
Criminal charges filed vs hired ‘goon’
Police authorities, according to PAL, “were nowhere to be found” when its truck was being blocked by protesters, but conveniently “arrested” someone who claims to have been hired by PAL management to “disperse” its former employees’ camp.
Apparently referring to a certain Johnny de la Cruz, a criminal complaint had already been lodged against him by Palea, which is currently consulting its lawyers on another case to be filed against the “purported mastermind” of the attack.
Pressed to name the mastermind of the incident, Palea women’s committee head Ginalyn Licayan declined to pin down PAL at the moment pending the results of the investigation by the Pasay City police.
“We can’t pinpoint so far but we are aware that someone out there wanted to see us booted out of the protest camp,” she told Sun.Star.
Dela Cruz had signed a sworn statement to the police that he was paid together with others to dismantle the campout, Palea said.
Casiño, meanwhile, said that Congress is already drafting a legislation that would lessen these types of attacks against labor unions and employers that would use such means may face sanctions. (Kathrina Alvarez/Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
