Pagasa: ‘Bebeng’ to exit Luzon Tuesday
May 10, 2011
MANILA (Updated 1:10 p.m.) — The state weather bureau said Monday that Tropical Storm Bebeng (international codename: Aere) is expected to exit Luzon Tuesday morning.
In its press conference Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Bebeng” will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday.
“Bebeng” lashed the northeastern Philippines on Sunday, killing 10 people and forcing more than 100,000 villagers to flee from farming towns threatened by landslides.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the fatalities as Rexambard Tayamora, (9) of Bato, Catanduanes; Maribel Ruelan (19), Princess Ruelan (8 months old), and Marco Sanchez (7) of Sitio Ikog, Balatan, Camarines Sur; Aristeo Sabido, 31, of Barangay Tanawan, Lupi, Camarines Sur; Arnulfo Pesito, 23, of Libon, Albay; Lourdes Lantero, 58, of Daraga, Albay; Jerry Mijares, 38, of Lope de Vega, Northern Samar; Luis Dingcol, 47, of Carigara, Leyte; and Adrian Clark, 16, of Libon, Albay. The storm slammed into Catanduanes province with winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 100 kph. It triggered landslides and floods, disrupted transportation and knocked out power in some towns.
However, the weather bureau said Monday that the tropical storm has weakened slightly to maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center as it made landfall over Northern Casiguran. The Pagasa said “Bebeng” will weaken further as it continues to traverse landmass and may become a low pressure area as it exits Luzon Tuesday.
As of At 10 a.m. Monday, the center of “Bebeng” was estimated 55 kilometers north northwest of Casiguran, Aurora and is moving at 15 kph.
The Pagasa still hoisted storm signal number 2 in Aurora, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Mt. Province, Kalinga, and Cagayan. Still on signal number 1 are Northern Quezon, Polillo Island, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Babuyan, Calayan group of Islands, and Batanes.
Tropical Storm Bebeng is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over the rest of Southern Luzon and of Visayas. The Pagasa advised residents in low lying areas and near mountain slopes under signal number 2 and 1 to take all the necessary precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone. (Sunnex)
