Pacquiao not keen on Floyd

BAGUIO CITY — If American Floyd Mayweather does not need Manny Pacquiao, the feeling is mutual, said the Filipino boxing great.
Showing up in his early morning jog at the Burnham Park on Tuesday, Pacquiao, who arrived in the Summer Capital Monday evening, told reporters he is also not interested in fighting the newly crowned World Boxing Council welterweight champ.
“I don’t need him either,” Pacquiao said when asked about Mayweather’s rant in a post fight conference after scoring a fourth round knockout against Victor Ortiz.
“Sa na-accomplish ko sa career ko satisfied na ako kahit ‘di na kami maglaban (I am satisfied with what I have achieved in my career, I don’t need to fight him),” said the Sarangani lawmaker.
Although boxing fans are pushing for a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, which may earn the biggest paycheck in boxing history, Pacquiao said he will likely focus on his training for his upcoming fight.
“Wala naman na akong dapat patunayan sa boxing kaya sa ngayon concentrate na lang ako sa susunod kong laban (I have nothing to prove to Mayweather, for now, I will concentrate on my next fight),” said Pacquiao.
The pound-for-pound king officially started his training camp at the “Summer Capital” Tuesday for his November 12 bout with Mexican Juan Miguel Marquez in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The eight-division champion started an early morning workout as famed trainer Freddie Roach arrived Tuesday morning with Venezuelan boxer Jorge Linares, one of Pacquiao’s sparring mates.
Reports said two more sparring partners for Pacquiao are on their way to the Philippines.
Pacquiao will train in Baguio for one month before completing his training in Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California.
Filipino assistant trainers Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri supervised Pacquiao’s early workouts, while conditioning expert Alex Ariza started doing his chore last week.
Aside from jogging, Pacquiao has done gym work at Planet Jupiter in Makati City and at the MP Tower, which he owns, in Sampaloc, Manila.
Pacquiao and Marquez faced for the first time in 2004, which ended in a controversial draw despite Pacquiao having floored Marquez three times in the first round. Four years later, Pacquiao ended their rematch with a thrilling split decision victory.
Baguio City has consistently become part of Pacquiao’s training because of the cool weather and the high altitude leading to his superb body conditioning, and has been a favorite of Pacquiao since he fought Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in 2009.
Pacquiao’s sparring mate Linares is also preparing and doing his own training for his fight against southpaw Antonio DeMarco of Mexico on October 15 in Los Angeles for the vacant WBC lightweight division.
Marquez is also a righty like Linares and Roach said the once-beaten South American will be of great help even for a limited time. (Sun.Star Baguio/Sunnex)
