Pacquiao fight slows down activities in Pampanga

PORAC — The much anticipated fight between Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez has brought the province to a virtual standstill as people stayed indoors watching the fight.
In Sta. Rita and Guagua towns, traffic and commercial activity in the morning just a few hours before the fight was relatively light. People shopping at the commercial districts of the said towns were in fact noticeably fewer in number.
Norbeto Lising, a vegetable vendor inside the gigantic Guagua Public Market, said his customers made an early buying spree the previous day to spend the whole of Sunday with their families to watch the fight.
“Even the drivers that bring people here have been rushing home or to the free venues to watch the fight,” Lising said.
In fact, even the traffic along major thoroughfares like the Jose Abad Santos Avenue and MacArthur Highway in the City of San Fernando saw light to moderate traffic, according to random observations made by Sun.Star Pampanga.
In various places like Angeles City, City of San Fernando, Minalin, and Guagua, officials and families with access to the live feed of fights have attracted hundreds of viewers.
In Porac town, Mayor Condralito dela Cruz and Vice Mayor Dexter David, in cooperation with municipal officials, sponsored the live showing of the fight inside the Jose Songco Lapid Sports Gym in Barangay Cangatba. Close to 1,500 people trooped to the venue to watch the fight.
David also sponsored free food and drinks for the spectators in coordination with the town mayor.
David said the free food is his early birthday treat for local residents.
The vice mayor will celebrate his birthday this week.
He said he was happy with the support shown by his kabalens for Pacquiao.
Mayor Dela Cruz also stayed with the rest of the spectators to watch the fight until the 12th round.
“This event brings us to an opportunity to bring people together and in unity cheer for the People’s Champion who is fighting for the honor of our country,” Mayor Dela Cruz told Sun.Star Pampanga.
In nearby Barangay Babo Sacan, Councilor Mike Tapang hosted the free pay-per-view live showing in at least four venues here and in Barangays Sta. Cruz, Pias and Pulung Santol.
Hundreds of spectators also watched the fight, with some squatting on the floor and not minding the noonday heat just to get a glimpse of the fight.
“The fact that people come here and take time to support Manny Pacquiao is a clear example that we still have that sense of community as a people, and we will never leave a fellow Filipino who is fighting for the country’s honor,” Tapang said.
Pacquiao prevailed over Marquez via a majority decision, Saturday (Sunday Philippine time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Though most were waiting for a knockout win here, Tapang said Porac folks are still proud of the victory of Pacquiao.
“This only brings a closure to the question of who is the better fighter. But for us, it has always been Pacquiao since the start,” Tapang said.
