Oregon 2010 vintage drops 24%

A difficult vintage for Oregon was made more clear in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2010 report, which shows wine grape tonnage dropped 24% from 2009.
The country’s fourth-largest wine-producing state crushed 30,700 tons, compared with 40,200 in 2009. The industry attributed this to poor fruit set in the spring, cool weather during the summer and fall and loss to disease and animals.
The tons per acre were an anemic 1.83, down from 2.58 tons per acre in 2009. Acreage went up 900 in 2010 to 20,300, and harvested acreage was at 16,800. Not surprisingly, the price per ton went up to $2,030 from $1,910 in 2009.
It should come as no surprise that Pinot Noir continues to be the dominant grape in Oregon. The state increased its Pinot Noir acreage to 12,265 from 11,523 in 2009. Harvested acreage topped 10,000. Nearly 60% of Oregon’s vineyards are Pinot Noir. A decade ago, just 46% of Oregon’s acreage was Pinot Noir.
Pinot Gris is the only other wine grape with at least 1,000 acres in Oregon. Last year, 2,400 acres of Pinot Gris were harvested, up from 2,360 in 2009.

9. Gewurztraminer: 312 (489)
10. Viognier: 236 (367)
Yamhill County remains, by far, the favorite place to grow wine grapes in Oregon, producing 9,975 tons last year, down from 12,575 in 2009. Polk County was No. 2 with 3,841 tons. A third of the state’s acreage also is in Yamhill County, with 6,511 acres of grapes in the ground. Of that, Pinot Noir takes up 5,169 acres, or 84.34%.
Yamhill County also has the most wineries, with 127 in 2010, up from 108 in 2009. Overall, Oregon has 315 wineries, up from 275 in 2009.
According to the report, Yamhill county lost 3,181 tons of wine grapes last year. Animals made up the largest part of the loss, figured at 1,627 tons. For the entire state, reported loss was 6,975 tons, compared with 1,002 in 2009.
In 2010, Oregon sold 1.93 million cases of wine, up from 1.66 million cases in 2009. Pinot Noir made up 955,367 cases of that, and Pinot Gris added another 401,849 cases. All but 59,537 cases were sold inside the United States.
