One mobile number for all networks proposed

IF A BILL filed by Senator Manuel Villar Jr. is passed into law, mobile phone users will be able to switch networks and keep their numbers.
The senator said rising dependence on mobile phones has created a subscriber base of around 80 million users by 2010. He added that because of promos offered by mobile phone service providers, users will be inclined to “avail of telephone service that will cater most [to] their needs as valuable consumers.”

He said that mobile phone users are often deterred by the hassle of changing “from one service provider with miserable service to a service provider with superior service” because that will mean changing phone numbers.
Under his bill, postpaid subscribers who opt to change carriers will be able to keep their numbers as long as their names and numbers are registered with their original service provider. This will only be allowed if the subscriber doesn’t have outstanding mobile phone bills or other liabilities with their original carrier.
Postpaid users who switch to prepaid service will also be allowed to keep their number under Villar’s bill.
“Mobile telephone number portability is already available in some parts of Africa, Australia, and most European countries including Britain and even in some parts of Asia. Apparently, the Philippines is behind these countries who opt to provide convenience and quality telephone service to the consumers,” he said.
