Officials pledge interventions vs crimes
May 10, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Officials from third and fourth districts recently vowed to support the Pampanga police in its anti-crime efforts and put in place the necessary interventions to curb the increasing crime rate here.
During last week’s peace and order committee hearing at the Capitol, police bared that for the third district alone, 132 high-profile crimes were committed from January to April this year.
The police also sought the help of local officials in their campaign against lawless elements.
During the “Araw ng Magsasaka” celebration in San Roque, Sta. Ana town, third district Representative Aurelio Gonzales vowed to augment the shortage of police personnel through an appropriate program.
Police officials said that during an earlier dialogue with Archbishop Paciano Aniceto, Gonzales asked them about their needs and the root cause of the upsurge of crimes in the district.
“Definitely, after hearing their concerns, we will augment the number of police personnel. That is the number 1 problem not only in the third district but in the whole country. But I will see to it that the necessary peace and order infrastructure will be put in place as soon as possible, and we will support the police in terms of logistics and their other needs,” Gonzales told Sun.Star Pampanga.
Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said he has noted the high crime rate in the city and similarly vowed to make the necessary moves.
“One of the reasons why our police officials were reshuffled is the high crime rate. Ako rin, nakita ko iyun. Nalulungkot ako kasi despite our continuous efforts to entice investors and people to come in, pag mataas ang crime nakaka-discourage at nakakasira sa ating initiative to enhance the city,” said Rodriguez.
“We will have to change plans, the system, and we are looking at installing CCTV cameras in strategic areas all over the city. I observed what they did in Davao City at a cost of P1 billion. But here, kung mga P50 million lang for the sensitive areas, we will do that to enhance our peace and order condition,” he added.
The same plan was shared by first district Board Member Crisostomo Garbo, who told police during the recent peace and order committee hearing at Capitol that the P20-million CCTV project of the Provincial Government is in the works.
“It has been approved by the Provincial Board and soon, we will install these high-tech CCTVs in strategic areas across the province, plus the immediate training of barangay peacekeeping personnel,” he said.
In Sta. Ana, which was cited by police as one of the relatively peaceful third district towns, Mayor Omeng Concepcion promised to support more barangay officials and Bantay Bayan personnel of the town.
“We have given them the necessary equipment like radios and patrol vehicles. We will beef that up with the help of Congressman Dong [Gonzales] and Governor Lilia Pineda. We are looking at training them to maintain peace and order here. Our police are fully supported by the municipal government, but we will further support them in whatever they need,” Concepcion told Sun.Star Pampanga.
In Macabebe, fourth district Congresswoman Ana York Bondoc-Sagum suggested that all officials should unite, put the necessary interventions in place as soon as possible, and not let their guards down against crime.
“You know historically, the 4th district was the dumping ground of victims and the base of some criminal elements. It only stopped to make us one of the most peaceful districts when the proper infrastructure like well-lighted road networks and areas were done. Still, we should not let our guards down and continue to support lawmen and unite to reduce crimes in the province,” Bondoc-Sagum said. (Jovi T. De Leon)
