Nursing studes file complaint vs school

AT LEAST 72 nursing students have already submitted a formal complaint against the Liceo de Cagayan University before the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) over the nursing department’s alleged “questionable and unjustifiable evaluation” on some students who are supposed to graduate last October.
A hearing at the Ched’s office is set on November 14 at around 2 p.m.
The students cried foul over the nursing administration’s “lack of compassion and mercy towards the students” after only 80 nursing students graduated last month out of 126.
The students said their grades were released very late and they were just informed that they failed in their subjects.
They said they even paid the graduation fees early while their parents were already expecting they would graduate.
Documents obtained by Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro showed that the school introduced last July additional subjects as part of its curriculum, with an equivalent of four units, to be added to the students’ existing load.
Because of this, the students were made to pay P3,188 for the subject, which was scheduled four hours once a week.
However, the students said they failed to attend some of the subject reviews because the schedules kept on changing without prior notice.
Lawyer Evangeline Tadlas-Carrasco, legal counsel of the students, said because of this, the syllabus was not followed or finished and that examinations given after the lectures were not based on the topics discussed.
“The students were left on their own and were given broad topics of the subject without any teachers or professors guiding them. As a result, more than half of the graduating class failed the subject,” Carrasco said.
She said the students were given only a piece of paper with their corresponding grades without apparent computation on how the grade was made.
“There was no computation and that the grades given to the students were not detailed,” Carrasco said.
She said the giving of grades did not also conform with the student’s manual and that no proper dissemination of information was given to the students about the grades required.
“It has been painful to the students because they presumed along with their family that they will graduate because the school collected graduation fees, yearbook fees, pinning, pinning uniform and other miscellaneous fees,” Carrasco said.
She said some students were traumatized that they don’t even want to leave their rooms while some transferred to other schools due to trauma.
“I hope this issue will be resolved so that the students will graduate on time,” Carrasco said.
Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro visited the school but was informed that the dean of the nursing department is not available for interview.
