No toxic waste from beer company
Monday, January 24, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – An official from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Central Luzon said the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) in this city is not releasing toxic waste into rivers.
Raldy Pagador, senior environmental management specialist from EMB, said SMC has a waste water treatment facility that sanitizes the industrial waste they release into rivers.
Pagador added that SMC has complied with all sanitation standards set by the environment agency.
“In fact, they were given a double gold rating, which is the highest award for compliance with environmental sanitation standards,” Pagador said.
SMC is one of the companies based in this city that Macabebe Mayor Annette Balgan pinpointed as contributors to the toxic waste buildup in her town.
She also said the Pampanga Sugar Development Company (Pasudeco) and the La Tondeña Distillers Inc. are releasing toxic waste that has affected the livelihood of her constituents.
However, government records indicate La Tondeña no longer operates in the city.
P5M for treatment facilities
A representative from the SMC, who requested anonymity, said the company spent P5 million for waste water treatment facilities.
“The company makes use of the province’s river system and so we need to comply with sanitation standards or we cannot operate. That’s why we spent about P5 million for our water waste treatment facilities,” he said.
He added that the waste water they release into the rivers is treated above government standards.
“It’s non-toxic,” he said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
