No religious conflict in RH bill, says prelate

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said Tuesday that the Catholic Church will not argue with other religious sects, or even members of the clergy supporting the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.
Aniceto, who is bound for Rome for the beatification of Pope John Paul II who installed him as bishop during his time, said the RH bill remains to be a moral issue that everyone has a right to speak of.
Recently, the Iglesia ni Cristo and Protestant churches, including the National Council of Churches in the Philippines, United Church of Christ of the Philippines, the United Methodist Church, have declared their support for the passage of the RH bill.
“Ito ay moral issue na lahat ay may karapatan maski anong religion pa. The Catholic Church will not argue with other groups to avoid religious conflict,” Aniceto, who heads the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, said.
Aniceto also earlier disclosed during a pro-life press conference that it was not pro-RH bill President Benigno Aquino III they were up against, but the anti-life and immoral provisions of the bill.
Last month, Aniceto led an intensified fight against the passage of the bill in a prayer rally attended by thousands of pro-lifers at Villa Del Sol in this city, coincided with the 50th death anniversary of Most Reverend Cesar Ma. Guerrero, Pampanga’s first bishop.
As for members of the clergy who are pro-RH, Aniceto said: “I think we should respect them for that. It is their moral and theological discernment. Sa Church, may dissenting opinions din. We leave it to their conscience.”
