New storm to enter Tuesday

MANILA (Updated 12:30 p.m.) — A brewing cyclone off eastern Mindanao will enter the Philippines on Tuesday with the initial track line showing movement toward the provinces of Northeastern Luzon, the state weather bureau said Sunday.
Graciano Yumul, the supervising Science undersecretary for the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said the low pressure area (LPA) may develop into a tropical depression by Thursday or Friday.
The LPA was spotted at 780 kilometers east of Mindanao as of 8.am. Sunday.
If the intensification continues, Yumul said the new storm to be codenamed “Goring” may pass the Samar-Leyte area, Bicol region and graze the Cagayan-Isabela area.
No indication yet if it will make landfall sometime this week.
“It’s still too far to affect the country so we don’t have to worry so much about it. However, weather systems such as the intertropical convergence zone will continue to bring bad weather in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao,” Yumul told Sun.Star.
Meanwhile, another weather disturbance some 220 kilometers west northwest of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, will bring rains over Southern Luzon and Visayas.
At present, the LPA is embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).
Unlike its counterpart in eastern Mindanao, weather website Typhoon 2000 said this LPA only has a 10-percent chance to turn into a cyclone.
Nearly two weeks ago, Tropical Storm “Falcon” (international name: Meari) dumped rains over large parts of Luzon, causing flooding in several areas in the country.
