New CBCP chief calls for cooperation from colleagues
July 11, 2011
THE new president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called Sunday for cooperation among his colleagues as he takes on the daunting task of being the Church’s top dog.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, who was elected Saturday as the new CBCP president, said he is hoping that the support shown by his fellow prelates would not stop at the elections.
“I’d like just to believe that it is also a sign of their confidence and at the same time, I will also have to solicit their cooperation,” Palma said in an interview over CBCPNews.
Palma also said that despite controversy surrounding the prelates over their alleged involvement in the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) fund mess, he remains hopeful that the bishops would remain steadfast in their calling.
“I just would like to ask my brothers and the people to… our intention… that as shepherds and servant leaders, we may realize the importance and sacredness of our responsibility and together with our people, may we journey towards becoming a country of life and love,” he said.
On Saturday night, Palma was elected as the successor of outgoing CBCP President Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar, who reportedly passed up on the tradition to re-elect him for another two-year term.
This, despite an earlier claim of Palma that he will be passing up the opportunity to become the next CBCP president if he is asked during their 103rd Plenary Assembly, citing his big responsibility to shepherd Cebu.
“The bishops, despite my desideratum so that I would have more time for Cebu, still give me the duty and responsibility… (They) put trust that despite the many concerns, we could still manage… in performing the tasks assigned to us,” Palma said.
Also elected as new officers of the CBCP are Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas (vice president), Dumaguete Bishop John Du (treasurer), and Monsignor Joselito Asis (secretary general).
Elected as regional representatives are Laoag Archbishop Sergio Utleg (North Luzon), San Fernando Auxiliary Bishop Pablo Virgilio David (Central Luzon), Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes (South Luzon), Antipolo auxiliary Bishop Francisco de Leon (Southwest Luzon), Boac Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista (Southeast Luzon), Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso (East Visayas), Kabankalan Bishop Patricio Buzon (West Visayas), Surigao Bishop Antonieto Cabajog (North Mindanao), and Digos Bishop Guillermo Afable (South Mindanao).
As for the heads of the different CBCP Episcopal Commissions, eight of the 31 have a new leader led by Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, as he will now head the Episcopal Committee on Bishops’ Concern.
Quevedo is among those who were investigated by the committee he will now chair over the PCSO fund mess before it was taken over by the CBCP Permanent Council.
He will replace Cebu Archbishop emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
Other new CBCP officials include Episcopal Commission on Culture’s Iligan Bishop Elenito Galido, Episcopal Commission on Family and Life Antipolo Bishop Gabriel Reyes, Episcopal Commission on Inter-religious Dialogue Jolo Bishop Angelito Lampon, Episcopal Commission on Liturgy Ipil Bishop Julius Tonel, Episcopal Committee on Pension Plan Dumaguete Bishop John Du, Episcopal Commission on Pontificio Collegio Filippino Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos, and Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care Military Ordinariate Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak.
The CBCP is currently having its biannual Plenary Assembly at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in Paco, Manila.
