Multinational firm’s mass dismissal of workers condemned
July 5, 2011
MEMBERS of a labor group held a picket Monday to condemn the termination of 400 workers of a banana plantation in Guinuyuran, Valencia, Bukidnon.
The Alliance of Progressive Labor (APL) held the rally in front of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) regional office.
Karl Yngojo, APL secretary general for Northern Mindanao, said a simultaneous rally was held in all parts of the country, denouncing the Dole Philippines Inc.–Standard Philippines Fruit Corporation’s (Stanfilco) mass dismissal of its workers.
Yngojo said the “ease and swiftness” in Dole Philippines-Stanfilco’s closure of the Guinuyuran farm is a brazen act of “illegal lockout and union-busting”.
The notice of termination was suddenly served on June 17 allegedly without prior notification and credible reason, Yngojo said.
“This smells of a possible collusion between Stanfilco and some local Dole officials…it also shows again the arrogance and insensitivity of multinational corporations (MNCs) like Dole-Stanfilco,” he alleged.
Most of the terminated workers are regular rank and file, and officers and members of the Guinuyuran Labor Union (GLU).
Yngojo said this raises suspicion that the shutting down of the farm is only temporary to pave the way on the company’s plan of using contractual laborers who have lower wages and benefits, and are banned from joining unions.
Yngojo also questioned why only the 140-hectare Guinuyuran farm was closed among a number of Stanfilco plantations in Bukidnon, which covered a total of 14,000 hectares.
Earlier, the management of Dole Philippines-Stanfilco said it would shut down the Guinuyuran farm due to “moko” and “sigatoka” (banana diseases) infestation and poor harvest.
However, Cesarlito Dayata, GLU president, refuted Stanfilco’s claim by revealing that the Guinuyuran farm remains highly profitable with about P5-million worth of average produce a day, relative to a mere P300,000 daily operational expenses.
Other observers also said the vast agricultural know-how of Dole Stanfilco, including its highly efficient crop production and integrated pest management system, would make its “disease-ridden bananas” contention a lame and very doubtful excuse.
Dayata also deplored the unusual deployment of military personnel in the farm following its shutdown, which causes intimidation and fear among the displaced workers.
To appease the workers, Stanfilco is offering a one-month separation pay per year of service and the release of 13th month pay, which the farmers rejected.
Instead, the farmers called on the management for their immediate reinstatement.
Meanwhile, Bukidnon second district Representative Florencio Flores Jr. and Akbayan Representative Arlene “Kaka” Bag-ao initiated a dialogue between the Guinuyuran Labor Union (GLU-APL) workers, Dole provincial and regional offices and representatives from Dole Philippines-Stanfilco at the Guinuyuran barangay hall on July 1.
Bag-ao expressed her disappointment with the government office and contested Dole Northern Mindanao’s statement, citing the inspection and verification of the legality of the lock out is incumbent of the Dole’s mandate.
Dole Philippines-Stanfilco division grows high-grade Cavendish bananas in several plantations comprising tens of thousands of hectares in General Santos, Davao and Bukidnon. The bananas are mainly exported to Japan, Korea and the Middle East.
It is a subsidiary of the US-based Dole Food Co., the world’s largest producer of fruits and vegetables such as bananas, fresh and packaged pineapples, grapes, strawberries, salads, other fresh and frozen fruits and juices.
It is reportedly operating with almost 76,000 full-time and seasonal workforce in 90 countries. Its revenue in 2010 was placed at $6.8 billion.
