Motorists warned of Monday traffic
Sunday, January 8, 2012
THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday warned motorists to bear with the expected traffic problems on Monday in Manila due to the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo.
MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Emerson Carlos said they will deploy at least 500 personnel around the Quiapo Church to manage the traffic flow and render assistance in case of any emergencies.
But he admitted that traffic problems will still remain due to the influx of devotees, which have started trooping to attend the most awaited religious event in the country since Sunday.
Authorities said they expect more than 8 million devotees from around the country to attend the feast. Last more about 7.5 million trooped to the annual celebration.
“Mag-expect na po tayo ng paninikip ng trapiko sa Quiapo area at sa Roxas Boulevard papuntang Quirino Grandstand,” Carlos said during the agency’s weekly radio program.
The areas that are expected to be affected by heavy traffic are the stretch of Roxas Blvd/Bonifacio Drive from Anda Circle to TM Kalaw, northbound and southbound lanes; southbound of Quezon Boulevard from Recto to Palanca; Lerma from P. Campa to Quezon Boulevard; Taft Avenue/Finance, westbound lane; Lagusnilad/P. Burgos westbound lane; P. Burgos/Taft Avenue, Freedom Triangle northbound lane; Villegas/N.A. Lopez and 25th Street/Bonifacio Drive, southbound.
Carlos said the Manila Traffic Bureau will close to traffic at 4 a.m. Monday the southbound Lane of Quezon Boulevard (Quiapo), from Andalucia/Fugoso to Plaza Miranda; España; P. Campa and Lerma Streets.
Beginning at Quirino Grandstand, the procession of the Black Nazarene will traverse several main and secondary roads before its climactic arrival at Plaza Miranda and finally in Quiapo Church.
Aside from the traffic, the agency will also deploy its 200-man Civil Disturbance Management Unit (CDM) headed by Atty. Cris Saroca to assist the police and local enforcers in crowd control as well as perimeter security of the Quiapo Church and the Quirino Grandstand.
“Simula po kahapon (Saturday) ng ala una naka-deploy na ang ating CDM units katulong ang Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group,” Saroca said.
Ambulances will also be deployed in strategic areas at the vicinity of the Quiapo Church as well as the route of the procession. Tow trucks from the agency’s Metro Parkway Clearing Group will also on hand to remove any traffic obstructions.
The agency said they have also installed 10 portable toilets at the vicinity of the Quiapo Church.
At the same time, Carlos said streetsweepers, commonly known as Metro Aide, will follow the procession to immediately remove any garbage or discarded materials left by the devotees.
“Pagdaan ng prosesyon nakasunod na agad ang ating mga Metro Aides at mga kagamitan para linisin agad ang anumang kalat na maiiwan,” Caros said, adding it was one of the orders of MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino.
Alternate routes for motorists
The MMDA also bared the alternate routes that motorists can use to avoid being caught in traffic jams along the processions routes.
