Mosquito repellants, fabcons not guarantees of dengue protection

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some mothers believe that mosquito repellant lotions or even fabric conditioners are enough to protect their children from mosquitoes especially dengue carriers.
But, a health expert says otherwise.
Dr. Rhodora Cruz, medical specialist and coordinator of the Dengue Controlled Program in Central Luzon, said mosquito repellant lotions and fabric conditioners do not guarantee protection against dengue.
“They might help but they cannot guarantee 100 percent protection. People will not even put on mosquito repellant lotions all over their body,” Cruz said.
Dengue is a fatal mosquito borne disease brought by the female Aedes mosquitoes.
Signs of dengue include recurring fever, skin flushing, bleeding of nose or gums, loss of appetite and nausea.
In the latest report of the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Luzon, Pampanga ranked third among provinces in the region with most dengue cases from January to July.
Dengue cases in the province are about 944 or 18.6 percent of the 5, 088 cases in Central Luzon. Out of these cases, there were already 20 deaths across the region.
Bulacan had the most cases with 1664, followed by Nueva Ecija with 1277.
These cases are 408 percent higher compared to the 997 recorded cases in 2010 within the same period.
“Given these high number of dengue deaths and cases, mosquito repellant lotions are really not enough,” Cruz said.
Earlier, the DOH launched the 4S, which include simplified ways of avoiding dengue.
Cruz said the 4S consists search and destroy efforts of mosquito breeding sites, seek immediate consultation should symptoms show up, self-protection measures like wearing of long-sleeved shirts and saying “no” to indiscriminate fogging operations.
Moreover, Cruz said cleaning the surroundings is not also enough.
“The most important action is the destruction of mosquito breeding sites. If there will be no breeding sites, there will be no mosquitoes and dengue,” Cruz said.
