Moro rebels reject government’s call

MANILA (2nd Update, 4:40 p.m.) — The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has rejected Malacanang’s call to stand aside as government pursues the arrest of Dan “Laksaw” Asnawi, who is facing multiple murder charges.
Ghadzali Jaafar, MILF vice chairman for public affairs, said neither would the MILF surrender Asnawi because the Moro leader was denied due process.
“We cannot surrender Asnawi now. He is accused of something he did which is a crime according to Philippine laws but this has to be proven first,” Jaafar said in an interview over ANC.
“We are not harboring anybody… we are responsible for the legitimate MILF and elements of Bangsamoro,” Jaafar added.
Jaafar said the case of Asnawi is not an ordinary case.
The MILF instead reminded Malacanang to comply with the existing mechanisms under the standing ceasefire agreement that would allow government troops to enter an MILF territory.
“We will not cooperate not unless this cooperation is done through established mechanisms as agreed upon by the Government of Philippines and the MILF,” Jaafar said.
Malacanang on Tuesday told the MILF to stand aside if the group will not help government troops in pursuing lawless elements responsible for the death of 19 soldiers in Basilan last October 18.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte clarified that government operation is not against the MILF as an entity but against the lawless elements within the ranks.
“Either they cooperate or stand aside and let our law enforcers do their jobs,” Valte said.
Asnawi was implicated in the beheading of 14 Marines in 2007. He was arrested and detained but escaped from the Basilan Provincial Jail in December 2009.
Asnawi is also allegedly involved in the encounter with government troops on October 18, 2011 that resulted in the death of 19 soldiers.
“Selected military operations must stop and this must be discussed in accordance with the mechanisms established and agreed upon by the two parties,” Jaafar said.
He said if attacked, the MILF has the right to defend itself.
Earlier, MILF provincial political officer Abu Majid denied Asnawi and the MILF’s involvement in the beheading of 14 Marines and pointed to the Abu Sayyaf group as responsible for the crime.
Majid asked the government to reconsider its decision to launch an attack against the group of Asnawi.
The military, meanwhile, clarified that the deployment of troops in Basilan has nothing to do with the October 18 clash.
More than 30 soldiers and civilians were killed in a series of skirmishes in various parts in Mindanao last month.
The incident triggered calls for the President to declare an “all-out war” against the MILF, which Aquino repeatedly dismissed. He opted to address the problem through an “all-out justice” ordering manhunt operations against lawless elements.
