Morales cites value of IT in country’s progress
May 4, 2011
MABALACAT – Mayor Marino ‘Boking’ Morales has cited the importance of information technology (IT) to a developing country like the Philippines.
The mayor, who acted as inducting officers during the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators Foundation, Incorporated (Psite) at the Shanghai restaurant in Angeles City recently, said that everything that man does across different fields today is driven by powerful information systems.
“The transformation of societies from industrial economies to knowledge and information-based services economies has done more than just collecting, processing, storing, and disseminating data in faster and reliable fashion,” Morales said.
“The fact is, as you are pretty well aware of, information technology has transformed not only how we work but how we play,” the mayor told the new members and officers of IT society.
According to Morales, no country or organization today will survive and prosper unless it develops and strengthens its information technology capabilities.
In advanced countries with well-developed IT sectors, there are more white-collar than blue-collar workers, the mayor added.
“By that yardstick alone, it is obvious that our country lags behind and has a lot of catching up to do,” Morales said.
“Our policy makers, IT experts, academe, and industry players should set aside their differences and focus on finding solutions on how we can leapfrog,” he added.
