Mercado: Making Pinatubo Day Realistic — Broom Brigade

BEYOND the media hype and feverish symbolisms of the Pinatubo Day, three projects impressed me for their necessity, social impact, and sustainable development.
The various fun runs, bikathon, walkathon, motorcade, painting exhibits and Eucharistic celebrations would easily fade from public memory but the following will continue to help the people:
1.The Renal Center established at the City Hospital by Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan. The first-ever medical facility to be introduced there, the Renal Center will go a long way in prolonging lives and alleviating the economic condition of patients who grovel under the heavy costs of dialysis and renal care.
2. The City College of San Fernando is a legacy project of Mayor Oca Rodriguez. His chief aspiration is to see that every Fernandino family has a daughter/son with a college degree. “Education is the key that opens all possibilities for a person to achieve his/her fulfillment,” the mayor is wont to stress in his message to the youth.
3. Governor Lilia Pineda’s Nabuclod settlement project tops all government efforts to uplift the blighted condition of the indigenous community (Aetas) in the region. People enjoy receiving cash assistance from Nanay Baby which provides them food for a day. But at Nabuclod, when developed into a sustainable agro-eco tourism community, the governor will not only will build a community, but also give the Aetas a sense of pride in what they can achieve, and develop their natural right for decent and prosperous lives.

An ancient wisdom cites that prosperity makes some friends and many enemies.
A sense of inevitable progress in Mabalacat town arising from its imminent conversion to a city has enlarged the “target” in Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales. Envious people now take potshots at his cityhood movement. Some want to derail the project.
Former allies and supporters of the proposed Mabalacat City have been reported taking an opposite course. A provincial board member and the town’s vice mayor were quoted as declaring their opposition to the cityhood of Mabalacat. But their voices were drowned by majority of local residents who expressed their resounding approval of the conversion by an unofficial plebiscite conducted by a research group.
Morales should not be distressed by the some politically-motivated oppositors who are known to be aspiring for the mayorship or the top leadership of the municipality. He has the support of the excited residents who realize the potency and dynamism of a prospective city and are preparing themselves for their responsibilities to participate in the opportunities and blessings under cityhood.

One memorable image in the memory of those who witnessed the Pinatubo eruption was the massive street clearing of ash and debris during and after the event.
The urban and countryside scene of Pampanga was virtually an epidemic center as people went with their daily chores wearing medical (gauze) masks.
Organizers of the 20th Year of Pinatubo disaster could have made the commemoration a reality show by simultaneous street cleaning operations. It not only emphasizes Pampangos’ innate trait of industriousness and cleanliness, but the salutary virtue of bayanihan, Kapampangan-style.
Our streets are not noticed for their healthful and clean condition. They need regular if not daily sweeping to make them spic-and-span. The next Memorial observance should include street cleaning brigades wearing gauze mask in a massive clean up drive. This can be the closest that we can come to reenacting Pinatubo’s aftermath realistically.
Angeles Office of Senior Citizens Chief Sitong Villanueva pledges to lead 5,000 of his card-bearing members to help in the broom work and in polishing Edpam’s image before the aging populace. Should such activity be included in next year’s celebration, why not feed the thousands of participants with the classic disaster relief food – Payless noodles, 555 sardines, and NFA repacked rice, and pork and beans.
That would be more dramatic and truly realistic than the symbolic “salo-salo” of the San Fernando celebrities in tonight’s affair at the Heroes Hall.
