Medical mission to give smiles to Angeleños
ANGELES CITY–”Let’s start looking at life differently.”
This was the statement of William “Bill” Magee, founder of the Operation Smile, when he came to the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center (RLMMC) with high hopes that lives of children born with hare lift and cleft palates from this city will change after undergoing surgeries.
Operation Smile was founded in the Philippines after Dr. Magee, along with his wife Kathy, visited Naga City in Camarines Sur in 1982. It was then in their first medical mission, with a group of volunteers, that they discovered hundreds of children in the country have deformities.
“We have helped many children during the first mission but there were still more. We felt like we had to do something about it telling ourselves, when we’ll come back, we’ll help those turned down children,” Magee, a plastic surgeon, said.
It was with that goal Operation Smile Philippines Foundation, Inc. (OSP) was formed in 1988.
OSP has since conducted year-round missions in partnership with public and privates groups across the country along with highly-trained local medical volunteers.
In Angeles City, the medical mission will start from November 8 to 18.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan welcomed the Magee couple noting that this is not the first time they choose the city for their free medical missions.
Pamintuan shared to the Magee couple the city government’s health programs including the improvement of the RLMMC facilities and the construction of a renal health care unit.
OSP has partnered with the Kapampangan Development Foundation (KDF) headed by former Clark Development Corporation President Benigno Ricafort and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), among others.
KDF is composed of Kapampangans who live and work outside Pampanga but are pooling resources to provide medical relief to their less fortunate Kabalens.
So far, the Magee’s missions have performed 200,000 surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities worldwide.
“It takes only 45 minutes to create a smile and change someone’s life forever. We all have gifts. Let’s share them to others,” Magee said.
