Mayor releases funds for typhoon-hit towns

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said Monday that the City Government of San Fernando is extending assistance to neighboring towns adversely affected by deep flooding brought by Typhoons Pedring and Quiel.
The mayor has ordered the City Government’s finance department to release the funds to be used to provide assistance to the said neighboring towns.
Still submerged in floodwaters as high as 15 feet are the towns of San Simon, Candaba, Apalit, Masantol, San Luis and Macabebe. Also affected are some barangays in Arayat, Sta. Ana and Mexico, including parts of Bacolor.
“Wag nating ipagkait ang ating calamity funds sa mga nangangailangan ng tulong (We should release our calamity funds to those who are needing help),” Rodriguez said during the flag raising rites at City Hall on Monday.
“Except for some real low-lying areas in the city like Barangay Pandaras, which is a water repository ever since, there are serious damages to infrastructure and no deep flooding that are alarming,” he told Sun.Star Pampanga.
In a follow-up interview, Rodriguez said the expected funds will be used to prepare relief goods and financial assistance if necessary.
On Sunday, the city mayor sent drinking water, relief goods and rescue personnel to the eight isolated villages of Masantol town.
“What we are doing right now is helping our neighboring towns with who are still in deep floodwaters by giving relief goods and extending other aid. We are thankful we were generally spared but we are prepared for any eventuality. Our Sagip Ilog helped a lot in averting massive flooding. If not for that, we could have been affected too,” he said.
The Fernandino team, led by City Administrator Ferdinand Caylao, had to take the alternate route in Calumpit, Bulacan to reach the isolated Kapampangan villages. The team boarded a special vehicle that withstood strong water current.
“Pagpapasalamat natin dyan na hindi tayo tinatamaan ng kasing grabe nila. Hindi rin naman natin masasabi na hindi tayo tatamaan pero gusto nating i-share sa kanila ang kaya nating i-share in this time of need, in this time of calamity para ma-feel nila na hindi sila nag-iisa,” Rodriguez added.
In San Fernando, the City Government earlier distributed relief goods to affected families in the city.
Rodriguez, also president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, has attributed minimal and isolated cases of flooding in his city to the Sagip Ilog Project.
During the onslaught of Typhoon Pedring, the Jose Abad Santos Avenue and Barangay Dolores were among areas in the city that experienced flooding.
The Sagip Ilog, known as the flagship project of the Rodriguez administration, is a P700-million program that seeks to rehabilitate the San Fernando river by creating slope protections, bridges and concreting of earth dikes.
The nearing completion of the project is expected to end massive flooding in the city during rainy season.
Rodriguez has been making the rounds of the city and neighboring towns since the onslaught of the two typhoons.
