Mayor receives city’s 1st cultural map
ANGELES CITY – Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan formally received the first documented cultural map of the city during the turnover ceremonies of the Cultural Mapping Project.
“A developed city that does not recognize its heritage and historical value is like a body that has lost its soul,” said Pamintuan.
The project was spearheaded by the Angeles City Tourism Office (ACTO) and the University of Santo Tomas Center for Cultural Conservation and Protection of Environment in the Tropics (UST-CCCPET).
“In a highly urbanized city like Angeles, it is very important to identify and compile its historical and heritage treasures since many of these are endangered,” said Cultural Mapping Project Director Eric Zerrudo, who is also the director of UST-CCCPET.
“Festivals and food are not assurance that we are doing well in preserving our culture. Without the details on how it came into existence, it’s nothing,” Zerrudo added.
Some 55 public school teachers and senior citizens participated on the four-month intensive ocular visits, field work and research about the 33 villages here.
For the duration of the project, the City Government provided each researcher P650 as transportation allowance.
The three-volume output identifies the heritage and cultural advantages of Angeles City, which were gathered through researchers’ individual and collaborative observations, folk interviews, and examination of heritage structures facilitated by UST-CCCPET.
“These (research outputs) are necessary since we are working on the promotion of the city’s brand. Through this we will be able to identify assets that will greatly promote Angeles as a tourism hotspot,” said ACTO Chief Christine Nunag.
According to Zerrudo, there are a lot of heritage structures in the city that are threatened by destruction because of modernization. Also, most cuisines that Angeleños and even tourists enjoy today are not the original Kapampangan way of cooking.
“The city is a hodgepodge of different races. With its proximity to the international airport, people here have adopted the ‘international taste,’” said Zerrudo.
For his part, Pamintuan lauded the researchers and facilitators who have “dug the roots” of the city’s forgotten treasure.
“This study will propel Angeles City up to the next progress and development,” said Zerrudo.
“This also marks Pamintuan’s spot in the history because this is a legacy to the next generation. Nobody did this for Angeles before,” he added.

Korean found dead in hotel
CAMP OLIVAS — A Korean tourist was found dead inside a hotel comfort room in Barangay Malabanias, Angeles City, over the weekend.
Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Recomono, Angeles City police director, identified the victim as Won Soojeong, 43, a female Korean national who was found hanging in a comfort room of the Hilltop Hotel Clarkview.
The victim checked in at the hotel around 6:40 p.m. on Thursday together with other Korean tourists.
She was at Room 112 while her other companions were billeted at Room 113, Recomono said.
Investigation shows that on Friday (November 2), Soojeng’s companions checked out of the hotel but the latter extended her stay. She even ordered her food the following day, Saturday (November 3).
However on Sunday, the front desk tried to call the victim but she failed to answer, prompting the hotel’s security guards and desk personnel to check the room using a spare key.
They saw the tourist dead inside the comfort room hanging using a cloth.
Police said they noticed no signs of foul play.
