Mayor Rama wants CCDC, BFP to explain deficiences in responding to fire alarm
July 11, 2011
CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday said he will ask concerned agencies to explain the deficiencies in the way they handled the two-hour fire last Saturday in Barangay Tejero.
While he said he is not upset, Rama said he will meet today the Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council (CCDCC) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), among others, to answer some of his queries.
The mayor said he wants to know, among others, how firefighters should address fire trucks that are stuck.
“I am not upset, but there are just too many questions that have to be answered and I have to be convinced with their answers,” Rama said in a phone interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
The mayor refused to further say the other queries he wants to be answered by the concerned parties, adding that he wants to reserve it for today’s meeting.
Rama also wants a reblocking and road-widening in Tejero as he observed that firefighters had a hard time responding to the fire alarm because of narrow roads in the area.
During the incident last Saturday, it took the firefighters almost two hours to stop the flames from spreading even with the help of fire trucks and volunteer brigades from neighboring cities.
Some of the residents also noticed that they ran short of water supply.
Based on the records of the barangay, the fire has displaced at least 193 families or 1,200 individuals as of yesterday.
Calamity
Also today, officials of Barangay Tejero will declare the three sitios—Sitio Looban, Sitio IKP (Inahan sa Kanunay’ng Panabang), and Sito Back Blessed—under a state of calamity.
Barangay Councilor Garry Lao, who will sponsor the resolution, said this will allow them to tap their P370,435 calamity fund this year to help the affected families.
Asked if the fire victims can rebuild their houses, Rama yesterday said they may do so once the fire scene will be cleared. “Fires should not be a reason for eviction,” he added.
At least 70 percent of the lot occupied by the displaced families in Tejero is owned by the City Government, while the remaining 30 percent belongs to the Lao clan.
