Mayor hopes no ‘Edsa’ anew
March 1, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said that he wouldn’t want to see, as much as possible, another people power uprising in the future.
Rodriguez said this after he led multi-sectoral groups in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the People Power Revolution or Edsa 1 last Friday at City Hall.
Hundreds joined in the reenactment of the globally famous Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) outpouring of millions of Filipinos, which brought down the Marcos regime.
“I hope not. I just hope wala ng Edsa 3 or Edsa 4 in the future so we can continue moving on with the changes we desire,” he said.
Rodriguez himself confessed he was one of the first to respond to the call of Jaime Cardinal Sin at the time, mobilizing people from the City of San Fernando and the whole of the province as well as workers’ groups, trooping to Edsa at midnight and defying the odds.
He added that Kapampangans, among the top three in terms of participation at the people power revolt, braved the dangers and risks of Edsa 1, “even at the risk of death.”
He said the Edsa experience and the martyrdom of the late Senator Benigno Aquino and other “brave souls” who fought to topple a dictatorship should never be forgotten.
“Let us not forget Edsa because it was the unity of people then and their patriotism that has led us to the democracy and freedom we enjoy today,” he stressed. (Jovi T. De Leon)
