Mass nurse oath-taking ceremonies scrapped

THE Board of Nursing (BON) has decided to scrap the traditional mass oath taking ceremonies of newly registered nurses.
Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said that according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), the BON had issued an official communication withdrawing its request for the usual inspirational and congratulatory messages from top government officials.
“While the oath-taking is a requirement of law, the Board decided to simplify it to save on costs and other expenses relevant to the holding of the traditional mass oath-taking,” said Baldoz quoting PRC Chairperson Teresita Manzala.
Manzala, added Baldoz, explained that the BON decided to do away with the mass oath-taking of successful examinees, citing the current socio-economic condition being experienced by Filipino families, “especially the income class, where majority of the nurses belong.”
Baldoz clarified, however, that oath-taking ceremonies will still be undertaken either individually or by groups upon their registration for nurse licenses with the PRC.
The Labor secretary noted that the simplification of the oath-taking ceremony will initially save the government thousands of pesos on printing cost due to the cancellation of the publication of souvenir programs, which are traditionally part of the expenses accounted during such events.
“It sets a fine example to other government agencies to be practical in areas, where effective and efficient fund management is necessary,” she said.
Baldoz said the doing-away with the mass oath-taking will immediately take effect with the July 2011 Nursing Licensure Examination passers.
The BON is the regulatory board for nursing professionals under the PRC, which is an attached agency of the Dole.
