Man drowns in floodwaters

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A man from Mexico town died from drowning on Saturday as floodwaters inundated several towns in Pampanga province.
Marlon Jay Musni, 15, from Barangay Sta. Cruz, was reported missing and was later found dead after falling from a waterway.
Based on the latest report of the Pampanga Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office, flooded towns in Pampanga rose to 18, which include towns of Guagua, Lubao, Minalin, Sasmuan, Macabebe, Floridablanca, Candaba, Arayat, Bacolor, Sto. Tomas, Mexico, Magalang, Sta. Ana, Masantol, Sta. Rita, San Luis, Apalit and this city to as high as four feet.
About 273 villages from these towns were submerged in floodwater.
A total of 1,228 families from towns of Guagua, Sasmuan and Floridablanca were transferred to evacuation centers.
Rice crop damage was estimated at P97,176, 230 while affected farmers are 4,336.
Damages to infrastructures include the collapse of about 200 meters slope protection along Caulaman River, Dampe section in Floridablanca town.
The 250 meters of slope protection along Caulaman River, Gutad section has also collapsed.
The slope protection in Barangay Solib has partially collapsed by about 40 meters.
In Candaba town, Barangay Barangka Malisik River has breached by approximately 10 meters, and about 10 houses from this town were damaged.
In Guagua town, the Natividad-San Juan creek has breached by about six meters while major road networks were not passable to light vehicles except those that are elevated.
Engineer Lulu Alingcastre, PDRRMC acting chief, said they have already distributed empty sacks for sand bagging activities to different municipalities.
Meanwhile, two families trapped inside their houses were rescued Friday morning.
Police said the unidentified families composed of nine members, were trapped inside their homes in Sitio Bana, Barangay Gutad in this town around 4 a.m. when flood waters rose to eight feet high.
Personnel from the Floridablanca Municipal Police Station and local officials, together with personnel of the Municipal Risk Reduction Management Council conducted the rescue mission. The families were successfully retrieved at 5 a.m.
