Mall security beefed up after Luzon passion crimes

THE police are beefing up security measures in malls in the Davao Region following the killing of a 17-year-old boy by his 13-year-old boyfriend who also committed suicide using the same gun inside SM Pampanga, Tuesday.
This was the third shooting inside a mall in less than two months.
Just last September 14, Shella Macapugay shot and killed her husband, Abel, who worked as a sales clerk at the Homeworld store in SM North Edsa after he allegedly left her for another woman. A security guard, who tried to stop Macapugay from killing herself after committing the crime, ended up dead.
Last July 29, a security guard was killed in a shootout with Games and Amusement Board employee inside SM Delgado Mall in Iloilo City.
Superintendent Jose C. Carumba, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 11, said the regional director Chief Supt. Jaime H. Morente already issued an order to his entire subordinate directors to assign at least two police personnel for every mall in the region.
Carumba said among the malls to be provided with additional security are SM City Davao, Abreeza Mall, Gaisano Mall Davao, Victoria Plaza, NCCC Mall Davao, NCCC Mall Tagum, and NCCC Digos.
“Our personnel will not just stay beside the security guards, from time-to-time mag-iikot din sila to observe the surroundings inside the mall,” Carumba said.
Superintendent Anna Maria Baladad, deputy director for operations of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said their chief Senior Supt. Rene O. Aspera on August 31 has already issued a memorandum reminding clients of malls and hospitals that bringing in of firearms is prohibited under Presidential Decree 1866.
“Even us police personnel are not authorized to carry firearms without permission to carry from the higher headquarters. The security measures were there already, kailangan lang talaga higpitan para walang makalusot,” Baladad said.
The incidents just show the need to review the security measures in place to ensure that weapons are not brought in.
Meanwhile, two teen boys were arrested after trying to steal the handgun of a security guard from the UWell Bodega Sale along Bangoy Street in Adgao at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
SPO1 Danilo Daguican, investigator of Sta. Ana police station, identified the victim as Medelio Lopez, 54, security guard of Iseng Guard Security Agency.
The suspects were identified as Jason, 16, and his brother Vincent, 15, (name with held due to their minority), both residents of Barangay Tomas Monteverde, Agdao, Davao City.
Daguican said the hand gun was placed inside a drawer when it was stolen. The guard only noticed it was gone, when he was about to render duty in the establishment.
Recovered from the suspects was a caliber .38 revolver with four live ammunition, bearing serial number 442554.
Before the incident, the authorities also seized an MK fragmentation grenade in NCCC Supermarket at Uyanguren, Lizada Street, Davao City, at around 9:45 a.m.
Carumba said that while the grenade belonged to a soldier, the mere sight of the grenade already caused alarm to the public.
“Although no one was harmed in malls dito sa atin, but this caused alarm to the public. Kailangan talaga higpitan yung pag-iimplementa natin ng seguridad sa ating region,” Carumba said.
