Locals plant 10,000 trees along Megadike

STA. RITA — The local government unit (LGU) here initiated the planting of 10,000 trees along the portion of the Megadike covering three barangays here to preserve the environment for future generations.
Mayor Yolanda M. Pineda and Vice Mayor Homobono Guanlao led department heads, municipal employees, barangay chairmen, kagawads, Sanggunian Kabataan officials, police personnel, students, school officials and non-government organizations in a simultaneous tree planting on Saturday, which covered the barangays of San Isidro, San Basilio and San Juan.
Pineda told Sun.Star Pampanga that hundreds of concerned residents joined the tree planting activity dubbed “Tanam Ku, Para Keka Sta. Rita,” a project of the LGU in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
She said the greening project in her hometown is a unique and rare opportunity for all stakeholders to make a lasting contribution to the environment.
“Today, we aim to plant 10,000 seedlings in the hope that one day, this program will pave the way for a generation of young people with ambition, passion and compassion for the environment who will grow with the trees that we plant today. May they be the ones who will safeguard our green treasure for their children’s children,” Pineda said.
Pineda said the LGU is doing all it can to preserve the environment, saying one of the programs being implemented by her administration is the now operational – material recovery facilities that would recycle garbage in the 10 barangays.
Also present during the activity were councilors May-May de Ausen, Johnny Cayanan, Bong Ortado, Vic Calo, Renato Gopez, and Dadi Salalila among others. (Chris Navarro)
