Local exec okays talks on industrial waste issue

SAN SIMON – The local chief executive here declared that she is open for possible talks with local officials of San Tomas town regarding reports of alleged dumping of industrial waste in Barangay San Matias here.
According to reports, several companies here have been employing individuals to dispose of harmful waste materials into an open dump site in Sto. Tomas.
Mayor Leonora Wong said she is willing to cooperate with Sto. Tomas officials, should they wish to determine which among the companies in her municipality are responsible for the dumping of said industrial wastes.
Wong said the company that is the subject of the complaint must be named so that she can conduct a thorough investigation and an ocular inspection.
“Hindi naman natin ito-tolerate ang ganitong gawain, kung kailangan nating ipasara kapag napatunayan nating totoo ay gagawin natin (We can’t tolerate these kinds of violations. If we have to shut these companies down, we will),” Wong added.
On Saturday, Sto. Tomas Mayor Lito Naguit revealed that their monitoring team was able to preempt the alleged dumping of used diesel in San Matias by a certain company from San Simon.
“The allegation is serious in nature and this should not be done in general terms. Instead, they should be able to identify the responsible companies,” Wong lamented. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
