Limlingan: Helping hands
The Advocate

WITH the back-to-back onslaught of typhoons in the country, we cannot just avoid having sad effects: either loss of lives or destruction of properties. For those who are not much endowed with material things, their lowly hut is their priced opulence.
When a calamity strikes, say a typhoon, everybody is economically affected although on different levels. For the wealthy, he might be feeling the effects of it but not too much and besides, he is too busy to be sad about it. The middle-class might not be affected that much, but he has to cope with it by working harder or by augmenting his earnings with “sidelines”. The lower classes are the most affected despite the lesser properties they lose.
Ironic, but those who have less in life seem to have the most pain of losing or being affected by a calamity. They are the ones who have the most difficult times coping up with a tragedy. While they seem to have not much loss, they have the hardest time bouncing back.
Resiliency is the only weapon of the poor. It is the light that guides their way during the darkness of a calamity. Being hit by a typhoon is a painful experience, and trying to regain one’s stance is another.
During these times, one good thing about us is our helping hands.
Naturally reposed in us is the compassion for others, especially during difficult times like after a typhoon. We have a way of being coherent, caring for each other and helping one another. We tend to be united during a calamity or other form of disaster as we always have a shoulder to cry on; we have our neighbors to count on.
During calm days, we have neighbors to rely upon. Perhaps we are aware of the practice that when we have no rice or viand on our table, we can always go to our neighbors and ask for some. Without any hesitation, our neighbors can share what they have right away even if it means that their stocks may run out.
It’s the good Filipino values that make us cope with any eventuality. Backed up by resiliency, no storm is too fierce for us to brace.
In other countries where there are disasters and calamities like we experience here, there are also helping hands that can be called. However, they are not that long to extend like ours. We give even if it means there will be nothing left for us. We give until it bleeds, as they say.
Relief goods are aplenty during calamitous times. It’s best that the government can give as “first aid” for a hungry stomach. No matter how politicized relief-giving is, it still helps victims of inundation or those who were left homeless and momentarily dwells in evacuation centers.
A can of sardines and noodles can be a feast to those who were victimized by heavy rains, strong winds and floods.
A smile is certain even when we experience weather disturbances. We can cope anyway and the faith that we have will always protect us from harm. We can always grin and bear the fact that we are on a typhoon belt in the Asian region.
I admire those who in the actual times of a typhoon onslaught, can still leave their families and rescue others in distress.

In Bulacan province, floodwaters rose to a second-story high. I got a call from a friend who was at the second floor of their house, while his feet were still submerged in a foot-high flood.
Their floodwater is brown in color. Apparently it came not directly from the rain but from higher places like the mountains. Dams released water as their levels were above spilling marks. This aggravated the floods, which practically transformed the vast tracts of farmlands in the province into a sea.
Experts believe that the floodwaters came from the Sierra Madre, a sure sign that the mountain range has been denuded since it cannot hold that much water anymore.
