Lawmaker shells out P4.2M in scholarship grants
Monday, January 24, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Some 1,677 students from the third district received a total of P4.2 million worth of scholarship assistance from Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. on Sunday.
The recipients are among the thousands of scholarship beneficiaries under the “Iskolar ng Dong” program.
The beneficiaries included 1,435 students from the City of San Fernando and from the towns of Arayat, Bacolor, Mexico and Sta. Ana. All of these scholars are taking up Bachelor of Science courses in different colleges and universities in Pampanga. Other recipients include 242 students from the district, who are enrolled in vocational courses.
The scholarship fund is part of the second batch of scholarship assistance for the first semester of the current school year.
Late last year, Gonzales distributed scholarship assistance to some 1,528 students.
Gonzales said the “Iskolar ng Dong” program has gone a long way, in the sense that hundreds of students have already graduated from their four-year, two-year and vocational courses through its help.
“The scholarship program will continue in the coming years, with more funding and more students benefiting from the program. Our aim is to put more students in school as long as they have the dedication and the drive to finish schooling,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales also urged the hundreds of student beneficiaries to strive for better grades and to take their studies seriously. He also urged the parents to help in their children’s education by providing them with proper guidance.
“The education of these children is not just the obligation of the school or of the government. It is also the obligation of [the] parents and the whole community. I for one dedicate myself in helping in their education,” Gonzales said.
Jelly Cortez, a vocational student, lauded Gonzales for his policy of according students with scholarship grants without the constraint of grade requirement.
“We are very fortunate that we have this kind of scholarship assistance that only requires us to have the dedication to finish our studies. We are very thankful to Congressman Gonzales for his unending support,” Cortez said in the vernacular. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
