Lawmaker offers 3,000 new slots under scholarship program

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Third district Representative Aurelio Gonzales announced Monday some 3,000 new slots under the Iskolar ng Dong program for school year 2011-2012.
Gonzales said the new slots have been vacated by former beneficiaries who graduated this school year.
He said his staff is now accepting new applicants for this school year to assure the continuity of the scholarship program.
“Our constituents can now be assured that our scholarship program will continue this school year,” Gonzales said, adding he will also open new slots to accommodate more students wanting to avail of the scholarship program.
Some 2,000 scholarships are now available for high school with another 600 slots for college and various slots in two-year vocational courses under the program.
Since he became a congressman, a total of 18,000 high school and college students have been given scholarship grants in his district.
Gonzales said the Iskolar ng Dong program has grown from 1,200 scholars in 2007 to 7,000 in 2008 and to 18,000 in 2009.
He said he is also studying the possibility of increasing the number of scholars for this year, adding indigent students who would like to finish their studies would be given the number one priority.
“We do not look on the grades but on the willingness and determination of the student to finish his studies,” Gonzales said.
He advised students aspiring to become a part of the scholarship program to submit their credentials to the congressman’s district office in Barangay Sindalan.
