Lawmaker doubts impeachment complaint vs Aquino will prosper

A HOUSE leader says the impeachment complaint to be filed by Anad party-list Representative Pastor Alcover Jr. against President Benigno Aquino III will likely get nowhere in Congress.
Alcover said he intends to file an impeachment complaint against Aquino after the government gave P5 million to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to create the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute, an agreement inked under the Arroyo administration.
“I seriously doubt it will prosper because despite the broad scope of betrayal of public trust, I do not see where betrayal is in giving the MILF P5 million. How can a genuine interest for long and lasting peace be considered betrayal of public trust?” Cavite Representative Joseph Emilio Abaya, chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations and ally of President Aquino, said in a text message.
In a statement issued last month, Alcover said that while he sees the impeachment complaint passing through Congress as “a very steep climb”, he said he will still pursue the filing “rather than be hounded with my conscience for reneging from my sworn duty and responsibility towards my country and constituents”.
Marcos loyalist Oliver Lozano has earlier said he filed an impeachment complaint against Aquino for refusing to provide state honors for the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
Aquino’s allies in the House of Representatives have said Lozano’s complaint would not get support from legislators.
Akbayan party-list Representative Kaka Bag-ao, for her part, said she rather study first the impeachment complaint to be filed by Alcover.
“In impeachment proceedings what constitutes betrayal of public trust is left to the members of the House of Representatives to define. I prefer not to cast judgment on an impeachment without even reading its content,” she said in a text message.
