‘Lawin’ threatens northern Luzon; Batanes under signal no. 3
MANILA — Weathermen raised public storm warning signal no. 3 over the Batanes Group of Islands on Thursday morning as Typhoon “Lawin” has slightly weakened and continued to move towards the Batanes-Cagayan area.
With this, Lawin is still posing a “threat” to extreme northern Luzon, said the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
It said the Batanes Group of Islands is expected to experience 101-185 kilometer per hour (kph) winds within the next 18 hours.
Signal No. 2 remains hoisted over Cagayan, including Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, which are expected to experience 61 to 100 kph winds within the next 24 hours.
On the other hand, signal No. 1 is still raised over Ilocos Norte, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Isabela as winds of 30 to 60 kph are expected within the next 36 hours over these areas.
Pagasa said residents living in coastal areas under public storm warning signal 3 and 2 are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by the typhoon.
Weather Forecaster Rene Paciente said that as of 6 a.m. Thursday, Typhoon “Lawin” was located 340 kms. East of Calayan Group of Islands (19.5°N, 124.9°E) with maximum sustained winds of 205 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kilometers per hour (kph).
He said Lawin is forecast to move northwest at 13 kph and is expected to leave the Philippine territory by Saturday or Sunday heading towards Taiwan.
Pagasa said the typhoon was forecast to be at 130 kms northeast of Itbayat, Batanes by Friday morning; 200 kms east of Taiwan by Saturday morning; and at 140 km west of Okinawa, Japan by Sunday morning.
Pagasa said areas within Lawin’s 800-km diameter are expected to experience rainfall of 10 to 25 mm per hour, which is classified as heavy to intense.
The weather agency said fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon and Visayas due to big waves generated by Lawin and southwest monsoon.
In its advisory, Pagasa said that Cagayan, Calayan, Babuyan and Batanes Group of Islands will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas.
Abra, Ilocos Norte, Kalinga, Apayao and Isabela will have rains and gusty winds.
Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas will experience cloudy skies with occasional light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with occasional light to moderate rains or thunderstorms.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to northwest will prevail over Central Luzon, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino and coming from the southwest over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
