Laus group pays tribute to Pinatubo heroes

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Laus Group of Companies (LGC) held Wednesday a thanksgiving mass and paid tribute to the unsung heroes of the conglomerate who helped overcome the tragedy wrought by Mt. Pinatubo eruption.
The occasion coincided with the 20th anniversary of the CarWorld and LGC headquarters, which was completely constructed on June 15, 1991, the day of the “big bang.”
The LGC office has become historic and symbolic, since most of meetings and planning sessions on saving Pampanga and San Fernando were held there as it became the Pinatubo operations center.
A marker-resolution from the City Government of San Fernando declared the CarWorld building along Jose Abad Santos Avenue a part of the contemporary history of the city.
During the brief program that succeeded the Holy Mass, LGC chairman and chief executive officer Levy P. Laus cited the sacrifice of the men and women of the firm who never abandoned their posts despite threats, and in ensuing efforts to help Kapampangans rebound from the tragedy.
“We have the likes of Efren Olalia of CarWorld Olongapo, Sony David, Nitz Razon, Frank De Jesus, Romy Sanchez and DWRW’s Perry Pangan for their sacrifices despite threats and risks. The men and women of LGC were the first to conduct relief operations, providing water and bread for evacuees and responding to needs like fuel which we ordered released to the last drop to help distressed motorists,” Laus said.
He added that during the 2,600 days of infamy, the LGC organization stood beyond the ashfall, playing significant roles in the triumph of the Kapampangan spirit.
“RW, in fact, was established not for business but as a response to the need for communication then. It became during that time as both the center of communication and relief operations with the sacrifice of Perry Pangan and his staff,” Laus said, adding, “Now our trimedia — CLTV 36, dwRW 95.1 FM and Sun.Star Pampanga — continue to raise the importance of commemorating the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.”
Laus said he is proud LGC has become part of history and in efforts to make the next generation remember and never forget the lessons from the Pinatubo experience.
