Last war veteran dies

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A 94-year-old World War II veteran from this city died of old age last week.
Colonel Samuel Quiwa, born on February 3, 1917, died on February 11 and was buried at the Good Shepherd Memorial Park in Barangay Dolores on Wednesday.
Quiwa was among the 17 World War II veterans from San Fernando.
The other 16, who mostly died of old age, were Col. Emerenciano Singian, Col. Miguel Pingol, Lt. Col. Pedro Yumul, Architect Norberto David, Dr. Pamintuan, Engineer Manabat, Major Jorge Santos, Master Sgt. Fred Polintan, Capt. Isidro Polintan, Lt. Col. Modesto Polintan, Col. Pacifico Marin. First Lieutenant Abel Quiwa, Major Mario Esguerra, Capt. Antonio David, First Lieutenant Primitivo Bamba, and Dr. Eduard Normandy.
The names of Fernandino veterans surfaced after Quiwa made a preliminary documentation, which he later showed to Mayor Oscar Rodriguez.
Rodriguez used Quiwa’s documentation materials in making a monument for war veterans from the city.
Based on his 201 File, Quiwa has joined battles in Bataan and in Corregidor.
A 201 File contains set of documents maintained by the government of the United States for members of the US Armed Force. It also contains documents describing the member’s military and civilian education history.
Quiwa was able to escape the Death March that started in Mariveles, Bataan and ended in Capas, Tarlac after Bataan fell in 1942.
During his escape, Quiwa went to Corregidor but later surrendered to Japanese colonizers. He became a prisoner of war for 20 days along with US military officials.
When he was released, Quiwa joined the guerilla forces in Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija during the whole period of the Japanese occupation.
He returned to the military in 1945 and was assigned to the 103rd Military Police Command, now the Northern Luzon Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Some of his awards include Philippine Defense Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal and Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific War Theater Campaign Medal, Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge, Distinguished Unit Badge with Two Oak Leaf Cluster.
He was able to receive a lump sum from the US government as President Barack Obama implemented the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 or the Stimulus Bill.(Charlene Cayabyab)
