Labor groups stage protests; applicants troop to job fairs

may 2, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — While labor groups in Pampanga renewed their call for job security and wage increase, thousands of applicants trooped to a jobs fair sponsored by the government.
More than 700 laborers from Clark Freeport, Mabalacat and San Simon staged separate protests in Angeles City that both ended in short programs at the Plaza Miranda.
The Workers’ Alliance in Region 3 (War) along with government employees and supporters gathered at the Nepo Mall Quadrangle in Angeles City and later marched the city’s main streets.
Dexter Datu, War chairperson, said their group is still pushing for the P125 across the board wage increase. “Our fight for the P125 wage increase continues,” Datu said.
Datu said the daily basic wage rates of P173 to P302 in Central Luzon is still inadequate given the ballooning prices of oil, food and other basic goods and services.
In an earlier rally, the Manggagawa Para sa Kalayaan ng Bayan (Makabayan) in Pampanga started their protest at the Bayanihan Park near the Clark Freeport main gate. The group later marched to Plaza Miranda in Angeles City.
Ludynela Hamor, spokesperson of the Makabayan in Pampanga, said they are continuing their call to job security and abolishment of contractualization.
Hamor also said they are also pushing for a wage that can support a laborer’s family. She did not, however, give an amount.
Across the region, labor groups have also staged protests.
In Zambales, hundreds of workers and unionists from various factories inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) together with their supporters from the religious, urban poor and other sectors gathered at the Rizal Park Triangle.
In Tarlac, thousands of workers from Luisita Industrial Park (LIP) gathered at the Ninoy Park and held a rally.
Tarlac is President Benigno Aquino III’s hometown.
In Bataan, labor groups have also gathered on a forum on the Filipino workers state.
