Labor groups oppose higher fees of government agencies

LABOR groups have opposed a plan to raise fees charged by agencies, a move that will allow government to further narrow
its budget deficit but will further burden jobseekers.
These sentiments were expressed by various labor organizations on Wednesday, after Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima announced the proposals earlier in the week.
The plan includes hiking fees charged by agencies such as the Land Transportation Office (LTO), the Land Registration Authority (LRA), National Statistics Office (NSO), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Land Transportation and Franchise Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Once implemented, these additional fees may lead to the rise of charges in, among others, NBI clearance, passports, and birth certificates, documents used for applying jobs.
Additional fees will further burden the workers, Alliance for Progressive Labor (APL) Secretary General Josua Mata said.
“This will be an added burden for the workers, who are already finding it hard to make ends meet. The government is once again picking on the working poor to make up for its own inability to collect taxes properly,” Mata said in a phone interview.
Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) Chairman Elmer Labog said the plan is simply against the poor because these agencies provide services needed by jobseekers.
“Dagdag pang pahirap ito sa mga mamamayan ang panibagong pagtaas na ito. We are definitely against anti-people policies of past and current governments,” said Labog.
According to Mata, the government should instead seek help in its finances from the rich people and big corporations.
“They should go after the rich and the big corporations, who are not paying taxes properly,” Mata said. (AMN/Sunnex)
