Kapampangan Center to mark 10th year with 10 books

March 11, 2011

ANGELES CITY — The Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) will start the countdown to its 10th founding anniversary early next year with the launching of three books this month.
The books, all authored by local writers, are the first installment of the 10 books lined up for publication in the months leading to the Center’s 10th anniversary on March 8, 2012.
The books are “Amidst Unsung Heroes and The Battle of Porac,” a two-in-one eyewitness account of World War II in Pampanga by Angeles City historian Daniel H. Dizon; “Kapampangan Dictionary” compiled by Father Venancio Q. Samson of Sta. Ana; and “Heirloom Recipes of Atching Lillian: Romancing the Traditional Calutung Capampangan” by Lillian M. Lising-Borromeo of Mexico.
The first two books will be launched on March 8 at 5 p.m. at the Academic Lecture Hall, St. Joseph Bldg., Holy Angel University, while the third will be launched in Borromeo’s ancestral house in Mexico town also next month.
The authors of the books are all homegrown talents, CKS Director Robby Tantingco said.
“Supporting local writers and promoting local history and culture have always been the Center’s mission since its founding ten years ago,” Tantingco added.
The Center for Kapampangan Studies, named after the founder of Holy Angel University, Juan D. Nepomuceno, opened on March 8, 2002 as the University’s contribution to efforts to preserve Kapampangan culture.
Daniel Dizon, author of “Amidst Unsung Heroes and The Battle of Porac,” is the oldest living historian of Angeles City. His father was Vicente Alvarez Dizon of Bacolor, the painter who beat Salvador Dali and other artists from 79 countries in a 1939 painting competition held in the United States.
World War II historian Ricardo Trota Jose wrote the book’s Introduction while Francisco Roque edited it.
Samson, on the other hand, compiled the 800-page Kapampangan Dictionary, which contains over 10,000 Kapampangan word entries with English definitions.
Samson is the translator of a previous publication of the Center, Diego Bergaño’s Vocabulario de la Lengua Pampanga, and the Archdiocesan Kapampangan Missal and Bible.
Borromeo is a Kapampangan culinary guru who promotes traditional Kapampangan recipes through her regular show on cable TV and during culinary tours held in her backyard kitchen in Mexico.
