Kabalen journalists still mourn death of colleagues
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Two years after the killing of 32 media practitioners along with 25 civilians in Maguindanao province, Kapampangan journalists commemorated the incident that has branded the Philippines as the “most dangerous place” for journalists.
Wearing black shirts, Kapampangan journalists along with fellow media practitioners from Bulacan and Bataan linked up arms as their cry of justice for their slain fellows.
“Hindi tayo magbababang luksa hangga’t hindi natin nakakamit ang hustisya,” Ashley Jay Manabat, chairman of the National Union of Journalists (NUJP) in Pampanga, said.
Manabat has also reiterated their call to Justice Jocelyn Solis-Reyes to inhibit herself from other cases to hasten up the hearings on the Maguindanao massacre case.
Bong Lacson, president of the Society of Pampanga Columnists, said “we solemnly observe the second anniversary of media’s own day that will live in infamy.”
“The evil of that day impacted in our minds, the tragedy befallen our colleagues inscribed in our hearts, the heinousness of it all troubling our very souls. Two years have passed. In the Filipino tradition, the period of mourning has already ended a year back yet. That life has moved on. But not to us,” Lacson said.
Fred Villareal, vice chairman of NUJP-Pampanga, said the second anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre coincided with the first International Day to End Impunity as declared by foreign media organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
To mark the international commemoration, Kapampangan journalists sketched a body on the ground, which they later surrounded with candles.
Local journalists also marched from the San Fernando City Hall to the city’s metropolitan cathedral.
A mass celebrated by Pampanga Archbishop Paciano Aniceto followed.
In his homily, Aniceto asked journalists to guard themselves and keep their lives as it is a gift from the Lord.
