Justice chief defends boss
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III is not and will never be a dictator just to accomplish his anti-corruption agenda, one of his aides said Wednesday.
This developed after Father Joaquin Bernas, former law dean of the President’s alma mater Ateneo de Manila University, said Tuesday Aquino went overboard when he questioned the Supreme Court’s (SC) credibility in a public event.
Bernas even likened Aquino to communist leader Fidel Castro, who seized power in 1959 and ruled Cuba for nearly 50 years.
But the President isn’t about to turn into an iron-fisted leader, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said, commending his boss for showing determination in running after the wrongdoings of the Arroyo administration.
“I don’t think this President has ever the tendencies or psyche to be autocratic or dictatorial. The correlation was unfair,” she said.
On Monday, Aquino slammed Chief Justice Renato Corona for being a midnight appointee of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and his perceived partiality toward cases involving the incumbent Pampanga lawmaker.
It was already the second time in less than a week that Aquino assailed Corona after he did so last December 1 at the event of the Makati Business Club, wherein he called the SC “confusing”.
Corona wanted to talk peace but an official statement of the SC found the President’s tirades as disturbing and uncalled for.
Arroyo’s allies in the House of Representatives and even militant lawyers went on the offensive as the Catholic Church expressed willingness to mediate between Malacañang and the High Court, but only if it will be asked.
Still, De Lima said Aquino should not be blamed for chiding the SC because he was merely articulating the sentiments of the public.
“The SC or the judiciary is a coequal, independent branch of government but it was never meant to be independent from the people or the will of the people,” she said. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
