July 27, 2011
MANILA (Updated 11:36 a.m.) — Tropical Storm Juaning (international codename: Nock-ten) made landfall in Aurora province Wednesday morning, the national disaster council said.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Benito Ramos said “Juaning” hit Casiguran, Aurora around 9:30 a.m.
He said the storm is expected to bring heavy rains in Central Luzon as it changes direction.
Meanwhile, Ramos said the number of fatalities due to the storm has risen to 20.
Benito said the fatalities include seven in Albay, two in Catanduanes, one in Camarines Sur, two persons in Cavite, one in Marinduque, one in Iloilo, five in Camarines Norte, and one in Quezon.
The NDRRMC also said 31 persons were injured and nine went missing due to the storm — three in Albay, two in Quezon, two in Catanduanes, one in Lucena City and one in Camarines Norte.
Meanwhile, the Catanduanes Governor Joseph Cua placed the province under state of calamity to use their calamity funds to support their ongoing relief operations.
Placing the area under state of calamity will allow the local government to use its calamity funds to address the needs of the affected residents.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) still hoisted public storm signal number two over Quezon including Polillo Island, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Kalinga, Abra, Benguet, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Metro Manila.
Placed under signal number one are Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Camarines provinces, Albay, Burias Island, Romblom, Mindoro provinces including Lubang Island, Isabela, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Marinduque, and Cagayan.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, “Juaning” was spotted at 40 kilometers southwest of Casiguran, Aurora, packing maximum winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 120 kph. It is moving northwest at 15 kph.
Pagasa said the storm will leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday morning. (Sunnex)
