Juaning leaves P16M damages in Central Luzon crop
July 31, 2011
SAN FERNANDO CITY — The Department of Agriculture (DA) reported Saturday that Tropical Storm “Juaning” had left P16,344,080 worth in rice damage in Central Luzon with an additional P26,649 worth of damages to other crops.
The DA, in its Damage Assessment Report, said some 3,823.18 hectares of rice fields had been hit by the flooding.
Fortunately, most of the affected hectares were registered as partially damaged with a greater chance of recovery.
The DA said the current damages will not have a big impact on the general production and supply for Central Luzon in the current season.
Provinces damaged by the flood include Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac and Bataan.
Tarlac and Bulacan share most of the affected areas with 2,947 and 599 hectares of rice lands still in floodwaters, respectively.
Bulacan is estimated to have sustained some P8,419,051 damages in rice alone.
Meanwhile, an estimated P26,649 was recorded for the provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Nueva Ecija.
The DA said it is still compiling and verifying damage reports from various provinces as rains in many parts of the region have yet to stop due to Tropical Strom “Kabayan”.
The DA said statistics are likely to change if the weather in the coming days will not improve. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Tropical Storm “Kabayan” has maintained its strength as it moves 11 kilometers per hour (kph) north northwestward.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, “Kabayan” was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 930 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph.
DA Regional Director Andrew Villacorta earlier said that appropriate assistance and support will be accorded to the farmers affected by the storm. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
