Indigenous groups get ancestral lands
January 26, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — At least 168,000 hectares of ancestral lands in Central Luzon were already turned over to four indigenous groups in the region.
Salong Sunggod, regional director of the National Commission of Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) in Central Luzon, said land titles were already given to Dumagats, Aetas, Abelling and Kalanguya groups.
In Pampanga, Aetas from Barangay Nabuklod and Mawacat in Floridablanca; Barangay Calumpang and Marcos Village in Mabalacat; Barangay Camias, Diaz, Inararo, Sapang Uwak in Porac; and Sitio Target in Sapangbato, Angeles City now own some 24,000 hectares.
After the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the Aetas were forced to leave the mountains and were resettled to government sites.
In Bataan, about 147 Aeta families occupy 4,300 hectares in Sitio Pastolan in Barangay Tipo, Hermosa town.
In Tarlac, about 150 Abellings families living in Sitio Socorro, Barangay Moriones in San Jose got 75.2274 hectares of residential and productive farm lots.
When the curly-haired Aetas married straight-haired lowlanders, they formed another group called the Abellings.
Moreover, some 41,000 hectares were titled to 686 Dumagat families composed of 3,000 individuals. These include 94 families from Barangay San Isidro, San Jose del Monte, and 162 families from Barangay Kalawakan in Dona Remedios Trinidad, both in Bulacan; 120 families from Barangay Dibut in San Luis and Barangay Zabali and Pingit, Baler, Aurora province; and 310 families from Barangay Rio Chico in General Tinio, Nueva Ecija.
Another tribe, the Kalanguyas from Barangay Capintalan, Minuli, Putlan and Salazar in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija now own 23,000 hectares of lands.
“Under the Ancestral Domain Claims, these lands underwent survey and delineation. The delineation determined the actual number of hectares covered by the claim and included a description of the features of the area,” Sunggod said.
These claims, Sunggod added, were later converted into Certificates of Ancestral Domain Titles which made the tribes owners of the lands they occupy.
